Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
