Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This
Whenever a major honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
